Caring for someone with dementia can fill your entire day with things that need to be done. Medication. Meals. Appointments. Personal care. Reassurance. Redirection. Watching for changes. And sometimes simply being there when the person you love is having a difficult day.
It can be easy to put yourself last.
But you are part of the care too.
Give Yourself Permission to Pause
Taking a few minutes for yourself doesn't mean you don't care.
It doesn't mean you're giving up.
And it certainly doesn't make you a bad caregiver.
Sometimes, you simply need to stop for a moment, take a breath, and allow yourself to recharge.
Even a short pause can make a difference.
Sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee or tea.
Step outside for a few minutes and get some fresh air.
Sit somewhere quiet and give your mind a break.
Ask someone you trust to stay with your loved one while you take some time for yourself.
If you have the opportunity to rest, allow yourself to rest without feeling guilty.

Watch for the Signs That You're Running on Empty
Caregiver exhaustion doesn't always happen all at once.
You may notice that you're becoming more impatient, overwhelmed, emotional, forgetful, or simply tired all the time.
You might find yourself thinking, “I just can't do one more thing today.”
Those feelings don't mean you're failing.
They may simply be your reminder that you need a pause too.
You Don't Have to Do Everything at Once
There will be days when the house isn't perfect, everything on your list doesn't get finished, or dinner is something simple.
That's okay.
Your loved one doesn't need a perfect caregiver.
They need someone who is doing their best, and that includes taking care of yourself enough to keep going.
So today, if you can, give yourself permission to pause.
Take a breath.
Sit down.
Step away for a few minutes.
Let someone help.
Rest is not something you have to earn.
You matter too.

A Gentle Reminder for Caregivers
You spend so much time making sure someone else is okay.
Don't forget to ask yourself:
“How am I doing?”
And if the answer is “I'm tired,” give yourself permission to pause.
You deserve that moment too.
You don't have to do this alone. Visit the Caregiver Corner for more support.
