Mealtimes can become challenging for people living with dementia. Changes in memory, vision, and coordination can make eating more difficult and sometimes frustrating. The good news is that a few simple changes can make meals feel calmer, safer, and more enjoyable for both the person with dementia and their caregiver.

Here are three easy tips that can make a real difference.

  • Use solid-colored plates. Avoid busy patterns, as they can make it harder to distinquish the food from the plate.

  • Take your time. Don't rush meals. Give plenty of time to chew, swallow, and eat at a comfortable pace.

  • Offer gentle help when needed. If the person is struggling, quietly guide them or assist without taking away their independence.

Every person with dementia is different. Small changes at mealtimes can reduce stress and help make eating a more enjoyable experience for both the person with dementia and their caregiver.
